Straight answers

Legality, safety and which sites take US players. Not legal advice; laws differ by state.

Is online poker legal in the US?

There is no federal law that prohibits playing online poker in the United States. Washington State does make online gambling a felony, but as far as we know no one has ever been prosecuted for playing online poker in the US. A handful of states (including New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Nevada, Delaware and Michigan) license and regulate online poker, but those rooms can only serve players located in the states where they are licensed, so traffic and tournament guarantees tend to be smaller.

Is online poker safe?

The safest option is a licensed, regulated site, but most US players live in states without one and play on offshore sites that operate in a gray area. Problems have happened before: Full Tilt Poker was found to be operating as a Ponzi scheme, misappropriating more than $300 million of player funds. Stick with reputable rooms like the ones we feature, and keep only a few sessions' worth of buy-ins online, topping up with a cryptocurrency like Bitcoin when you need to.

Which poker sites accept US players?

Even though most states don't license online poker, plenty of sites serve US players. We recommend Ignition Casino, Americas Cardroom, Bovada, Black Chip Poker and Everygame (formerly Intertops). Every site we feature has passed our review process, pays out quickly, and is a site we play on ourselves; see our best US poker sites guide.

Which poker sites are legal in the US?

No federal law prohibits playing online poker, so playing on any site is legal at the federal level. Washington State prohibits online gambling, but no one has ever been prosecuted in the US for playing online poker. Sites that offer games to US players include Americas Cardroom, Ignition Casino, Black Chip Poker, Bovada and Everygame (formerly Intertops).

What is the best online poker site?

It comes down to personal preference and game selection, but every site we feature offers fair games and quick payouts. For anonymous tables, choose Ignition or Bovada. For a full tournament schedule with big guarantees, choose Americas Cardroom or Black Chip Poker, and for good cash games, try Everygame (formerly Intertops).
